Turkey celebrated a momentous achievement in its tourism sector by welcoming 17,809,078 visitors from January to May 2024. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 15,784,213 of these were foreign tourists, with an additional 2,024,865 Turkish citizens residing abroad visiting during the January-March period. This influx bolstered the total number of visitors significantly.

In May 2024, the number of foreign visitors to Turkey surged by 14% compared to the same month in 2023, reaching a total of 5,130,119. Over the January-May period, the number of foreign visitors climbed by 12.47% compared to the previous year. In May, the Russian Federation emerged as the top source of visitors to Turkey, with 739,017 tourists, marking a 15.32% rise. Germany followed closely with an 18.12% increase and 729,505 visitors. The United Kingdom ranked third, showing a 21.62% growth and 550,592 tourists. Bulgaria and Poland were also significant contributors.

- Germany: 16.20% increase, 1,122,930 visitors

- Russian Federation: 1,078,294 visitors

- Iran: 51.78% increase, 946,437 visitors


These countries, along with Bulgaria and the United Kingdom, have played a pivotal role in enhancing Turkey’s cultural and natural attractions on the global stage.


Main Reasons for Visits: Tourism and Entertainment Lead


During this period, 63.6% of visitors came to Turkey primarily for “tourism, entertainment, sports, and cultural activities.” The second major reason was “visiting relatives and friends” at 22.4%, followed by “shopping” at 6%. Turkish citizens living abroad mainly visited for “family and friend visits” at a rate of 70.4%.
